6-11-09: Glad to be north of Cape Hatteras, we made it into Norfolk around 2 pm yesterday. The trip started off badly with an equipment problem. Francois, the auto pilot, was not working... at all. Thinking we were going to have to manually helm for over 3 days, we started calling marinas in Southport, NC. Fortunately, if only temporarily, Francois kicked back in and we pressed on. We ran into a bit of rough weather after rounding Cape Hatteras, at which time Francois went back on strike - made for a very long night. But for the most part, the North Atlantic treated us kindly.

It was feast or famine the entire trip. We either had about 7 or less knots of wind or up to 33 knots (during the squall) on the nose. The forecast said there was supposed to be 10-15 knots from the S-SW for about the last 24 hours of our passage, so we thought we might get some sailing in. As it turned out, we did some very minimal motor-sailing and mostly just motored with the sails furled because there either was not enough wind to keep them filled or too much from the wrong direction.
