Total time:  10 hours, 55 min., Total distance: 80.85 nm
1-11-09: We made it! We're in the Bahamas! Nice day - the gulf stream crossing was uneventful. We saw flying fish. Took some time to perform some calibration tasks.

1-16-09: Still at West End waiting for weather to cross the Northwest Providence Channel and head for a brief stay in the Berry Islands. We plan to head to Nassau after the Berrys and spend at least a couple nights at a marina to provision, do laundry, and most importantly, take delivery of (and install) the replacement part from Raymarine.

1-17-09: Looks like Tuesday will be a good day to get out of here. We're getting itchy. Time to go. Scroll down for new photos.

1-20-09: We're waiting out strong winds & high seas. Might be able to leave tomorrow (or Thursday depending on the sea state). We are thinking of going straight to Nassau rather than stop through the Berrys. Looks like our weather window might be big enough to get us all the way there (roughly 150 nm, about 25 hours at sea).

Total time: 26 hours, 20 min., Total distance: 135.9 nm
1-23-09: Fairly comfortable ride, considering. We are definitely glad we waited out the weather. Motor sail the entire way. A little excitement the first afternoon underway... Gregg caught a shark.

2-2-09: Looks like Wednesday is our day to leave Nassau. In the meantime, we went to the beach on Paradise Island (new photos below).
2-4-09
Nassau, New Providence-Allen's Cay
Crew: Gregg, Jen, Quinn
0850 - underway
25°04'.497N, 77°18'.790W
1245 24°51'.600N, 77°12'.400W
1640 (anchor down @ Allen's Cay anchorage) 24°44'.954N, 76°50'.285W
Total time:  7 hours (not including fuel stop), Total distance: 54.56 nm
2-4-09: A sleighride from Nassau. We arrived at a pretty crowded anchorage and there's quite a surge. An uncomfortable night was spent on anchor watch with strong winds out of the NW at around 20 knots.

2-5-09: Planning to leave tomorrow for Norman's Cay. We took a dinghy ride to Leaf Cay today to check out the iguanas. As the guide books stated, we just stood on the beach and were quickly visited by around a dozen or so of the creatures. Quinn had fun, but he was much more interested in playing in the sand than the iguanas.

2-8-09
Allen's Cay-Highborne Cay
Crew: Gregg, Jen, Quinn
1020 - underway
24°44'.956N, 76°50'.309W
1150 (anchor down @ Highborne Cay) 24°42'.966N, 76°49'.821W
Total time:  90 minutes, Total distance: about 7 nm
2-8-09: We moved to an anchorage in the lee of Highborne Cay today - just about 2 nm due south of our spot between Allen's and Leaf Cays, but not a direct route. Much nicer place and no lee shore. We get quite a bit of surge at high tide, but low tide is downright comfy in the NE 15-25 knot winds.

2-9-09: Went ashore today - left the dinghy at the dinghy dock at Highborne Cay Marina (no charge). With our WiFi booster, we can access their network from the anchorage, but they wouldn't give us the password to log on, even for a price. The marina grocery store had mostly canned goods and cleaning products along with some refrigerated items, all at a fabulous price. A 1.5 quart can of orange juice was over $5. We walked to the beach on the ocean side of the cay (maybe a 10 minute walk from the marina). It was the most beautiful sandy beach we'd ever seen... and nobody was there. Completely unspoiled. Within 15 minutes after we got back to Mirasol, a local fisherman stopped by the boat with fresh lobsters, so it will be fine dining tonight on the hook.

2-10-09
Highborne Cay-Norman's Cay

0922 - underway
24°42'.978N, 76°49'.827W

1110 24°35'.467N, 76°51'.627W
1220 (anchor down @ Norman's Cay anchorage) 24°36'.239N, 76°49'.224W
Total time:  2 hours 58 minutes, Total distance: 12.83 nm
2-10-09: Blew south to Norman's Cay today. We topped out at around 9 knots in the 15-25 knot east winds. Beautiful anchorage and no surge like the Highborne Cay location. We will probably wait here until we can get a mooring at Warderick Wells Cay in the Exuma Park. There is a small resort here - we plan to go ashore for dinner tomorrow night.

2-13-09: We were going to leave today to for Warderick Wells, but it's so beautiful at this anchorage and we hadn't really explored the island yet, although we did go ashore and have dinner at the Norman's Cay Beach Club last night. The club, by the way, consists of 3 guest cottages and a bar/restaurant - they had to go wake up the chef when we got there at around 5 to have dinner & watch the sunset. We tried "MacDuff's Cheeseburger in Paradise". It was indeed a great burger when you take into account that we were in the middle of nowhere. We did try the cracked conch, which we thought was really yummy. All in all, it was a pleasant night off the boat. And we didn't need to sail on Friday the 13th.

1348 (moored @ Warderick Wells Cay) 24°23'.571N, 76°38'.133W
Total time: 4 hours 30 minutes, Total distance: 26.35 nm
2-14-09: Motored to Warderick Wells. The wind was out of the SE, so it was on the nose the entire way. It was a beautiful trip into the park and the view from our spot is amazing. We plan to stay here for several days.

2-15-09: Got off the boat today to explore the island. We followed one of several trails that leads to the Exuma Sound side with fabulous views from cliffs over the beach.

2-20-09: Enjoying the Exuma Park, but after the cold front went through, it's a bit cold to snorkel. Jen had never snorkeled and gave it a try today anyway. Planning to leave tomorrow morning for Sampson Cay. We could easily spend two more weeks here at Warderick Wells, though. It's really beautiful and there are so many trails we have yet to hike and reefs yet to snorkel.

Total time: 3 hours 35 minutes, Total distance: 21.88 nm
2-21-09:  A very fast and fun sail down to Staniel Cay today.  We were over 7 knots for most of the trip with 15-20 knots of wind just forward of the beam.  We arrived at a VERY crowded but nice anchorage just west of Big Major Spot, which puts us about a 1 1/2 mile dinghy ride to Staniel Cay.

3-1-09: Spent a couple days at Black Point Settlement. Really enjoyed it. Nice locals and great anchorage. Staying at Sampson Cay Club now to wait out some strong westerlies and get some chores done. Plan to move on towards George Town in the next day or so. Oh... and we saw a green flash yesterday evening.

3-2-09: We'll check the weather again in the morning, but we're probably going to start heading south again tomorrow. Not sure now where we'll end up.

3-7-09: We spent the last few days at Black Point. Went out for dinner for a second time at Lorraine's Cafe, hiked out to Dotham cut, and did some maintenance & relaxing. We might be leaving tomorrow, probably for Little Farmers Cay. We need propane and we can't get it here.

Total time: 3 hours 28 minutes, Total distance: 19.86 nm
3-16-09: A few days ago, we needed to go back to Staniel Cay. It's not our favorite spot, but it seems to be the only place to get propane and provisions in the Exumas, except for George Town (Farmer's Cay was pretty, but kind of a bust for provisioning). Boaters were blowing conch shells at sundown this time, though, so that was kind of cool. Gregg has been out fishing quite a bit with little success. The Banks are pretty well fished out. The sail from Staniel Cay back to just south of Black Point was a great ride - fast, but the wind was from the direction we were heading. So, since we didn't have far to go, we sailed further west and south than we needed to and tacked back in.

3-20-09: We went fishing out in the Exuma Sound on Wednesday (3-18) was a great success! Gregg caught a 4 ft, approx. 25 lb. mahi-mahi. We had some for dinner, then vacuum sealed and froze the rest. We will probably get about 6 more meals out of that one fish. Yum. We're back at Black Point Settlement again - needed to get Gregg some time on the internet and Jen time to do some laundry. Black Point, by far, has the best laundry we've seen down here.

Total Time: 3 hours 6 minutes, Total distance: 16.96 nm
3-26-09: Finally, Wifi that doesn't require a dinghy ride! We're back at Warderick Wells, positioning ourselves for the overnight sail to Little Harbor in the Abacos. Winds have been peppy (15-25 knots) from the east for the last few days. Looks like favorable winds for a northward sail may be coming within the next few days and we're about ready to leave the Exumas. Our plan is to make one more trip in the Exumas, probably to Norman's Cay again, then leave there so we'll be getting to the Northeast Providence Channel sometime around 5 pm. It's about a 75 mile sail to our intended destination in the Abacos once we leave the Yellow Banks, so that should put us heading in around 8 a.m. the next day.

3-29-09: We're very much enjoying Warderick Wells again. It's so beautiful here. Our plans are to head to Nassau within the next few days to fuel up on the way to the Abacos. Currently, we are not planning to spend any time in Nassau, just long enough to fill the diesel tanks then we're off to cross the Northeast Channel overnight. There was a little excitement yesterday... our new neighbors here had some trouble picking up their mooring ball (strong tidal current and 15 knots of wind) and their dinghy (which they were towing) capsized and got sucked under the stern of their motor yacht. They cut it loose while they finished mooring and by that time it had been carried quite a distance from their boat. Seeing they could use a hand, Gregg dropped our dinghy and headed for theirs, which was still capsized. A couple other boats and 6 guys got it righted at towed to safety after about an hour.

Total Time: 7 hours 20 minutes (incl. 33 minute fuel stop), Total Distance: 40.52 nm
4-4-09: We stopped at Allens Cay last night enroute to Nassau - long sail from Warderick. Getting out of Warderick was interesting this time. It was low tide and the way we had gone through the channel before was too shallow - we watched the depth gauge go from 4 ft under the keel to about 1 1/2 ft... at which point we did a full reverse and jogged to the other side of the channel. Also, there must be a rather large magnetic anomaly just to the northwest of Warderick Wells. Our electronic compass was reading at least 30 degrees off for what seemed like several nm's. Eventually, it got back on track and we ended up not trying to adjust it at all.

Anyway, we didn't get in to Allens until 4:30 pm. It was pretty crowded by the time we arrived, but we found a spot near the beach to drop the hook. Once we were comfortable with our anchoring, we put on swimsuits and headed for the beach, where this time (as opposed to our visit in early Feb.), it was so warm out that the beach was loaded with iguanas. Jen counted over 40.

Staying in Nassau depends on finding a spot at a dock. There's supposed to be a significant blow coming through, affecting mostly the Abacos, but still peppy in Nassau - so anchoring in Nassau Harbour is not really an option (hard scoured bottom, poor holding, etc.). Anyway, if we find a spot, we'll stop, otherwise, we'll head straight on for the Abacos after fueling in Nassau.

4-5-09: We did find dockage, so we'll be waiting out the storm in Nassau. It's good for Quinn - we get to bring some treats on the boat he hasn't had in a LONG time, like strawberries & yogurt (2 of his favorites). Also, we'll probably be here until at least Thursday, so Jen will be able to take him to a story time again with a lot of other kids. He loved it last time. We'll also be able to provision here, get cash (which you can't get in the Exumas unless you take a cash advance on a credit card or make it to George Town, where they do have ATM's), and hopefully renew our cruising permit, which expires on Saturday, April 11th.

We are docked at Nassau Yacht Haven, which so far is OK. We are certainly in the working part of the harbour. The wakes from the other boats are brutal and last night (hopefully this was just a Saturday night thing), we were treated to very loud reggae and dance music well into the wee hours. We are docked directly across from the mail boats that deliver to the out-islands (see page header - Jen took this shot from the starboard side of Mirasol), which are all docked at Potter's Cay. We saw the Captain C frequently in the Exumas. BTW, Potter's Cay is basically an open air market - fish & produce. Plus it has stands selling food & drinks.

4-10-09: Planning to leave Nassau today. Finally. This last visit, while productive, has been less than pleasant. Glad to be moving on. We will leave the dock around 1100 or so, then head for a day anchorage so we can cross the Northeast Providence Channel overnight. That should put us in the Abacos by around 10 am tomorrow... or not.

4-13-09: Well, nothing ever seems to go as planned. We skipped the day anchorage and went straight through to the Abacos, meaning we had to go very slowly to arrive at the entrance channel in daylight. It was a very long night, beamy seas, and for Jen & Quinn, a bit of a queaser... although Jen was able to medicate. Hooray for Stugeron! Anyway, we are here in the Abacos, and so far, enjoying it very much - mostly right now just because we are finally breathing some fresh air again and enjoying the quiet after a long few days in Nassau. We have already had to pick up the anchor and move the boat because of shifting winds. We will have to move again tomorrow, but we have reserved a mooring ball in Hope Town Harbour.

4-15-09: We got into Hope Town around noon yesterday. It's really a beautiful area with lots of things to do. We have a clear view of the lighthouse, which is one of the few remaining manned lighthouses in the Bahamas. We all sat out in the cockpit last night and watched it and the light show provided by mother nature. Quite a storm went through and we had a few hours after dark to watch it approach with all the lightning. Today, we took Quinn on a tour of the lighthouse.

4-20-09: Saturday night was spent anchored in the lee of Matt Lowes Cay. We needed to make water and it was a pretty nice & quiet spot. Sunday we continued on to Marsh Harbour, where we are currently anchored. Got off the boat today, went out to lunch and wandered around for a while. We plan to hang out here for a few more days, then head to Green Turtle Cay. From there, we need to start making our way to Lucaya to pick up our crew for the sail back to the US.

4-26-09: We left of Marsh Harbour today at high tide. And, while we didn't absolutely NEED high tide, we felt more comfortable with high water considering low tide was below datum (about 1.5 feet under the keel in the anchorage) today and we really prefer not to hit the bottom... or anything else down there. We've watched at least two other boats have trouble getting their anchors up in Marsh Harbour. Our anchor arrived on deck with some rigging that it collected from the bottom. It wasn't much of a sail as we basically just moved northeast a few miles. We plan to hang out here, in the lee of Man O War Cay, for a few days and wait for a good day to go through the Whale Cay Passage, which apparently can be pretty dangerous in rough seas. So, we will wait for calm seas and then spend a few days anchored off Green Turtle Cay while we wait for the window to head to Charleston. We're going to skip Lucaya since we don't need to go there to pick up crew now. We expect to be in Charleston sometime around May 11... or not.

4-30-09: We're still anchored off Man-O-War Cay, but we plan to head out to Green Turtle Cay tomorrow morning.

5-2-09: Anchored off Green Turtle Cay near New Plymouth. We tried to do some fishing on the way, but all we caught was a very small (maybe 5 lb.) black fin tuna that, given the shortage of tuna, we could not keep in good conscience. We've spent the weekend at the Island Roots Heritage Festival - Quinn had a blast. Our next sail will probably be back to Charleston, SC. We plan to hang out here for a few days, do some sight-seeing and provisioning, and put the Bahamas to our rudder hopefully on May 8, meaning we should be in Charleston by May 11... or not.

5-3-09: Ok, so we are not leaving on May 8. It's a Friday. 1000 years bad juju. By the way, our last Friday sail (May 1) proved to be not a great day - we sailed out to the drop-off and didn't catch any fish (that we could keep anyway), and worse, one of the battens on the mainsail worked it's way out.

5-5-09: For Jen's 40th birthday (May 4), Gregg decorated the saloon with balloons and a "Happy Birthday" banner, and of course, a 40th b-day novelty mug for prune juice. Fortunately, only one of the balloons has had to be rescued after going over side courtesy of Quinn. Tomorrow, we are planning to head back south a little to Treasure Cay. We decided we didn't want to sit at Green Turtle waiting for weather and it looks like there's lots to do at Treasure Cay, including getting the diesel tanks filled.

5-7-09: We're anchored in Fisher's Bay off Great Guana Cay right now. We'll stay here for another day or so, then probably go to Treasure Cay. We're waiting for the right weather window now, hoping for early next week.

5-12-09: Gregg changed the oil on both diesels, Jen did laundry (sailing clothes, mostly), the jack lines are set up, the boat has been cleaned, most everything has been stowed (except, of course, the backpack), and we think we are about ready. We're planning to depart for Charleston tomorrow morning. We moved out of Marsh Harbour yesterday so we could make water and be able to go swimming/take Quinn to the beach one last time. Now we're anchored off Matt Lowes Cay preparing for an 8 am departure tomorrow... or not. On the way out tomorrow, we will try again to swing the compass which was giving us a little trouble yesterday. Gregg still has to move the dinghy motor to the mount on the stern, but that's about it. We've been watching the weather and plotting our course. If all goes as planned, we should be in Charleston by noon or so on Saturday, very tired, probably stinky, and after clearing customs & showering, we'll be ready for some barbequed ribs.
