11-9-08: Got an early start - departed Norfolk, VA, at 0750 EDT.

11-12-08: Waiting for a slip at the marina - anchored in Ashley River at Charleston, SC, at 0930 EDT. Docked at Charleston Maritime Center at 1300 EDT. We celebrated our safe voyage with mimosas and breakfast while at anchor waiting for our slip at the marina to open up.

11-15-08: We really like Charleston. It's mid-November and we're wearing shorts, the people are very friendly, the town is beautiful, and the food is fantastic. We were only planning to stay a couple days before we head out to Florida, but we decided we wanted more time to explore here so we're going to try to stay until Wednesday (Nov. 19). The dockmaster, Jeff, tells us that most people that come here usually plan to only spend a day or two but end up staying for a few weeks. We can see why. Coincidently, our slip-neighbors at the marina used to have a boat named "Mirasol" and they're heading to the same spot in Florida as we are, only they're planning to leave tomorrow.

11-18-08: Time to move on. We are planning to leave tomorrow around 1100 EST for St. Mary's, GA. It should take around 27 hours at 6 knots.

Total time: 28 hours 40 minutes, Total distance: 168.2 nm
11-19-08: We got out a little late and then had to spend some time calibrating the windex. The ride was very smooth until around 9 pm, when it quickly got very uncomfortable, i.e., steep 5'-7' waves on the nose. You'll notice in the track plotting below that there wasn't much interest in adding to the log after around midnight.

11-20-08: Overnight, Gregg tacked us back in towards shore. We were around 30 nm offshore and flirting with the gulf stream. Around 9 am, we decided to change our plans of trying to make landfall in St. Mary's partially because Jen was not feeling well and mostly because it was going to be impossible to get into port before dark. So, we ducked in at St. Simon's Island, GA, and opted for a very nice marina stay for the night. It was well worth the hot shower and good night's sleep. Not to mention that the marina left a newspaper and pastries on our deck in the morning. Nice.

Total time: 6 hours 35 minutes, Total distance: 44.23 nm
11-21-08: Just a day sail, and a pretty nice one at that. Following seas, 2'-4' rollers. Lang's Marina in St. Mary's, GA, is interesting. There is quite a bit of damage to the dock we're on (we assume from Hurricane
Hannah) that they're in the process of repairing but it is going slowly. Also a few sunken boats litter the shoreline. We are staying in this marina at least until Saturday, 11-29. It is cheap (.75/ft/night at the weekly rate), and there are no facilities to speak of, including no wi-fi, so website updates & email communications will be slow. On the upside, the people are extremely friendly. We had 2-3 boaters on the dock helping us tie up when we got in, and one of them (a guy on a monohull, "Moondance", who's homeport is also Chicago) even let us borrow a fender board since we didn't have any yet. We've had at least 3 strangers (boaters, but strangers) offer to let us use their cars to run errands. We originally were going to stop at Fernandina Beach, FL (which is just a couple miles away and a popular stopping point along the ICW) and pick up a mooring ball. Gregg was talking to another sailor in Charleston who told him there was a nice Thanksgiving gathering in St. Mary's for transient boaters. In particular, he was told there are lots of kids at the event. That was motivation enough, but to cap it, it's supposed to be pretty cold at night (mid-40's) and we'd be running the generator all night so we could have heat if we went to Fernandina.

11-23-08: So, this is apparently THE PLACE to spend Thanksgiving if you're a transient boater. A group of the town's residents host a huge Thanksgiving bash for transients heading south. They provide the location, turkeys & hams, N/A bevs, plates, utensils, etc. All the transients have to do is sign up, which we have done, and bring a dish to pass (& BYOB). Also, the schedule of events they gave us shows that there is a boaters party every night of this week starting tonight. Cool. We're glad we arrived when we did.

11-28-08: The locals here put on a great Thanksgiving day for the 85 boats and more that 170 boaters (I think those are the numbers I heard). There was plenty of food; turkeys and hams prepared by locals and sides and desserts prepared by boaters. If you're interested, here is an article about the event from last year: http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/112307/geo_219879863.shtml.

We are waiting until Monday to leave St. Mary's. We were thinking about leaving today, but there's a front coming through this weekend and we would mostly get caught in it, so we decided to stay until Monday. Downside of staying is that there really are no facilities, no wi-fi (on the boat anyway), and no grocery store or laundromat in walking distance. None of those things have really been a huge problem up until now - there were shuttles to the stores and laundry for the transients during the Thanksgiving festivities. The bigger problem at the moment is the holding tanks are filling up at a brisk pace (side-effect of the no facilities). But it should be a comfortable ride.

12-1-08: St. Mary's was a nice stay. Services near the marina are greatly lacking, but the community (locals & boaters) made it well worth while. We were definitely starting to get itchy to leave as we watched all the boats heading for the ICW clear out a couple days ago, not to mention watching the laundry pile up and the fresh food on board dwindle. We had to wait for a weather window, though - we need two good days at sea since we are planning to go around 230 nm.

Total time: 44 hours, Total distance: 234.2 nm
12-1-08: Got out when we wanted to. We started out with good winds - actually got to sail until around 1700, when the wind shut down and we had to start motoring.

12-2-08: Peppy night. We were caught in our first squall around 3 am. We had 40+ knot gusts with sustained winds in the high 30's for about 45 minutes. Uh... the weather reports did not indicate anything like this was supposed to come through tonight.

12-3-08: Got in early - we were tied up by around 0730. After showers and a quick trip to the grocery, we came back to the boat and napped. The marina is OK, but very expensive considering they don't have free WiFi. But, we are in Florida.

12-4-08: The marina does have an outdoor pool and the weather was nice, so Quinn got to go swimming today. The water was a little cold, but he had a ball anyway.

12-5-08: We were thinking about leaving late today and arriving in Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow morning, but we decided we would rather break the trip into a couple day sails. Overnight sailing is a lot of work - especially with a 3-year-old on board. The winds have just not been in our favor this entire trip south, so we motor-sailed again. But, we're anchored looking at palm trees off West Palm Beach, FL.

12-6-08: Another motor-sail today. It was actually a very pleasant ride until around 1300, when the winds shifted to the south-southeast and we started taking 1-2 foot waves on the nose. Not miserable, but not great.

12-14-08: We're back at the marina, but in a different location.

12-17-08: Gregg's parents are visiting for a few days and helping us get ready for our next adventure.

12-20-08: We still have a lot of things to do before heading to the Bahamas, so we extended our reservation here for another week. We have the solar panels but Gregg still needs to install them, and the gel coat guy and the carpenter still need to finish their warranty work.

12-26-08: Our first Christmas on the boat was nice. We cooked a fancy dinner of roasted beef tenderloin, green beans with pancetta and sage, mashed potatoes and homemade cranberry sauce. Then after checking in with NORAD to see where Santa was, Quinn went to bed. Santa left all the presents on the settee in the salon just under the mast support (photos below), which was decorated like a Christmas tree (lights & garland). We had been calling it the "Festivus Pole", but decided we'd best call it a Christmas pole. After dinner on Christmas, we turned on some music and went outside to enjoy the 75+ degree temps.

1-1-09: We were in the perfect location for New Year's Eve on the boat. We could see the ball drop across the river by the Performing Arts Center, then the fireworks that followed were almost directly in front of us.

Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes (including fuel stop @ Bahia Mar), Total Distance: approx. 5 nm
1-10-09: Still in Ft. Lauderdale, but now we're on a mooring ball at Las Olas, staging for the sail across the gulf stream to the Bahamas. We stopped yesterday on the way to the ball to fuel up, so we're ready... at least we think we are. We plan to leave tomorrow around 3 a.m. for West End. A note to family & friends: our cell phones will not work tomorrow through our return to the US. The phones are on vacation hold, so you can't leave voicemail either.
