Total Time: 3 hours 40 minutes, Total Distance: about 20 nm
7-26-08: Interesting day. We had lots to do, starting with dropping of Jen's car at the marina in Rock Hall. She's still hurting a bit from having to ride back in the rent-a-truck sitting on a box of Cat5 cable while Quinn was in the passenger seat in his car seat. When we got back to the CatCo docks, Gregg still needed to unload the truck, including launching the dinghy. We finally got underway around 4 p.m. and arrived in Rock Hall around 7:30 p.m. We had sustained south winds at 20 knots and 2-4 ft. waves and one reef in the main. Our top speed was 8.1 knots.

Total Time: 4 hours 45 minutes (including pump-out), Total Distance: about 20 nm
8-3-08:  We left our dockage at North Point for a day sail at around 1145. Still getting used to maintaining a log, we only remembered to capture time & position a couple times. The departure time is approximately the time we originally untied. There was about a 15-30 minute delay to the sail by waiting in line & pumping out. After pumpout, we headed out of Rock Hall harbor through a channel and a maze of crab pots, then turned almost directly south until we were getting kind of close to the Bay Bridge, turned around and headed back to the marina. We had about 10-15 knots of wind for most of the sail, but there was about an hour or so when we had only 5-10.

A side note, granted the winds weren't too strong, but nothing moved in the boat. We had framed photos setting up in the saloon and they were still in exactly the same spot when we returned. Jen also had a glass filled with water with some fresh basil - still in the same spot, no spillage. Gotta love a cat.

8-8-08:  We left our dockage at North Point for a day sail at around 1145. Headed for the fuel dock at the Sailing Emporium since we can't fit into the fuel dock at North Point.

Quinn fell asleep draped over the seat at the helm this time, before we even got any pictures of him.

Didn't take many pictures today - mostly a training mission. Jen trained on motoring and we both practiced tacking & jibing.

1455 (docked at North Point) 39°07.929N, 76°14.909W
Total Time: 4 hours 40 minutes (including stop at pumpout dock), Total Distance: about 18 nm
8-27-08:  We left our dockage at North Point for a day sail at around 1015. Tied up without incident at the pump-out dock, but the kids that run the station had gone back to school so we were not able to achieve our goal. Left the pump-out dock at 1045 and headed out into the bay.

We did a big circle again, but this time headed on a more southerly course and into the Chester River for a while. It looked like there was weather coming, so we didn't stay out for too long.

Also managed to calibrate the autopilot compass (deviation=1°) while we were out. This involves dropping sails and driving the boat in a circle for at least 2 rotations, then maintaining a constant heading long enough to get the autopilot heading to agree with the rest of the navigation system.

Total Time: 4 hours 20 minutes , Total Distance: about 18.5 nm
9-1-08: Got out pretty early (for us, anyway). Lots of chop. Labor Day - lots of power boats. Saw a regatta on the way in to Back Creek. A few of the race boats are actually on our dock. It was kind of cool watching them come in. We are here for warranty work. Total distance sailed was approx. 18.5 nm.

9-2-08: It looks like Hannah may prolong our stay here at Jabin's. Will know more in another day or so. The first stage of the gel-coat work was done today and some of the other smaller warranty jobs were completed.

9-6-08: Still in Annapolis at Jabin's. We think we have a pretty well protected spot for riding out the storm here, whereas we would be somewhat exposed in our slip at North Point in Rock Hall. The plan is to head back to Rock Hall tomorrow after a trip to the grocery store. Peak wind during the storm (for us) was 30.4 knots at 1650 EDT.

Total Time: 5 hours 15 minutes, Total Distance: 21.9 nm
10-12-08:  After a wonderful sendoff from our friends at NPM, we were on our way.  Unfortunately, there was very little wind, so we motor-sailed the entire 21.9 nm.  Our first time setting the anchor went relatively well and our first meal "on the hook" was steak and spinach salad with a bottle of wine given to us by Bill & Suzanne from TEQUILA.  The night was restful - except that Quinn spent most of the night in our bed.

10-13-08: We had some wind - not a lot, but enough to turn off the engines for about 3 hours or so. All in all, a nice, but long day. About 45 nm - total time was 8 hours 20 minutes. We finally chose a name for Mirasol's auto-pilot. It will be "François", in honor of her delivery captain.

10-16-08: Decided to spend a couple nights in a nearby marina to get some work done, i.e., shop, clean, laundry, mount water maker, and to hook up to power so we'd have movies available for Quinn because of the rain. Staying in a no wake zone in the rivers here, it only took about 30 minutes or so to get from our anchorage to the marina. BTW - nice marina (Spring Cove), affordable in the off-season ($1.85/ft) and they have free pump-out at your slip. Free is nice since we get charged double (2 holding tanks), problem here is that the hose doesn't reach the port hull, so we'll have to turn around to pump the other side before we leave.

10-17-08: Planning to leave Solomons tomorrow. Should be a long day - about 45 nm to get across the Potomac to our next anchorage in VA. Will probably be at least a couple days before we have internet access again. Anyway, it was a good stay here. We managed to get quite a few things done.

10-18-08: Wow. Bumpy (and fast) day. We had 25 knot winds with gusts over 30. It was a "queaser". As our friend and future crew, John, would say, "it was blowing like stink". We were both eating crystalized ginger hoping to not hang our heads over side. On the upside, we did 48 nm in less than 8 hours.

10-19-08: It was still "blowing like stink" today (gusts over 30 on the bay, we guessed), so we decided we could wait a day to head on to Irvington. After Irvington, we plan to head on to Sarah Creek off the York River, then to Norfolk.

Total Time: 7 hours 5 minutes, Total distance: 36.02 nm
10-20-08: Not much wind today. We sailed for about the first half of the trip and motor-sailed for the rest. Then, as we turned in to head up the Rappahannock River, the wind turned on and we had 10-15 knots on the nose. Made for a cold river cruise. Total distance: 36.02 nm, total time: 7 hours 20 minutes.

10-21-08: We picked this anchorage in Carter Creek because of the recommendation in the "Gunkholer's Guide", and it is pretty and quiet, however, it does not appear that there is a lot to do off the boat. We're going to try to find a dinghy dock so we can get Quinn some exercise today. He hasn't been off the boat since the 17th. Update: we got off the boat for a short while tonight - long enough to have a very expensive dinner at The Tides and for Quinn to run around for a while. Tomorrow morning, early hopefully, we will be heading out for Yorktown, VA.

10-22-08: Started out moving down the Rappahannock - at like 8+ knots. Ok, for the winds, maybe we were a bit over-powered. When we got out into the into the bay, we put 2 reefs in the main and 1 in the jib and we were still seeing speeds in the 7-8 knot range. So, yeah, we needed to reef. Waves were steep and close so Quinn & Jen both were feeling a bit queasy. Jen put some aromatherapy oil behind Quinn's ears and gave him a gingersnap - that seemed to do the trick for him. After a few hours, the winds settled down a bit and we ended up motoring up the York River because what wind there was, was right on the nose.

Total Time: 6 hours 45 minutes, Total distance: 38.43 nm
10-24-08: Most of the ride was pretty bouncy and uncomfortable - 10-15 knot winds on the nose and steep, close waves. We motored the entire way, put out the jib when we turned in towards Norfolk at around 1400 EDT.

10-29-08: We've been mostly working on getting ready for going offshore. Quinn, unfortunately, has a touch of the flu so Jen hasn't been able to get him out to do much. He did get to go to a Halloween party at the Children's Museum of Virginia where he had a great time... and we figure that is probably the source of his bug. Hopefully he'll feel better soon so we can get him out a bit more before we head out. The photos from the party are below.
